The Lowdown on Face Oils

Although you might be used to seeing face oils in other people’s routines, you may not be so familiar with them in your own.

Read on to discover why you should make room for one in your regime and how our Perfect Night’s Sleep Face Oil is not just for better skin, but sweeter slumber too…

What are face oils?

Put simply, face oils refer to a blend of multiple fragrant and non-fragrant (and sometimes synthetic) natural plant oils designed for use on the skin (side note: single oil face oils such as jojoba do also exist). All of us produce natural oil (some more than others) to protect our skin, and the basic idea of using face oil is for us to supplement that oil. While both non-fragrant and fragrant oils carry with them their own skin benefits, non-fragrant oils are considered much less volatile than their fragranced counterparts. Yet, fragrant plant oils, commonly referred to as essential oils, have a wide range of their own benefits (like helping to reduce inflammation and balancing sebum) and are extracted from different parts of plants using various methods. A word of caution: if you are using essential oils, always use them blended with carrier oils. Never use them neat on skin and look out for recognisable plant names which have been tried and tested for efficacy and safety.

What are the benefits of face oils?

Thanks to their myriad ability to address several skin concerns, from lack of radiance and firmness to dehydration and an uneven skin texture, plant oils are a wonderful addition to any skincare routine. As well as helping to keep skin’s hydration locked in, they’re also a rich source of anti-inflammatory antioxidants, vitamins and fatty acids and so have an instant smoothing effect on skin and work to increase suppleness and improve skin texture. Essential oils also have special aromatherapeutic properties which affect our limbic system, or our ‘emotional brain’, the area in our brain responsible for emotion, memory and mood. As well as impacting the health and quality of our skin, these potent ingredients can also transform the way we think and feel, helping us with everything from increased feelings of relaxation and contentment to improved focus and productivity.

Who can use face oils?

The beauty of face oils is that there’s one (or several) for almost every skin type depending on your needs. And contrary to popular belief, as well as being suitable for those with dry or dehydrated skin, face oils work beautifully on oily complexions too. Although it sounds counterintuitive, face oils can actually help to balance out skin’s own oil levels without stripping it and causing it to become overzealous in its production. Despite what you may think, face oils can be a real tonic for acne-prone skin too, helping to stimulate cell turnover, balance pH levels and soothe soreness and existing damage; look out for formulations containing lavender, rose, peppermint and sandalwood oil which can help reduce inflammation and reduce redness, and citrus oils like lemon, orange, mandarin and clove oils which have high antiseptic, anti-bacterial and antimicrobial properties.

When to use face oils

Unlike serums which are formulated using ingredients which penetrate deeply into the skin and moisturisers which deliver both oil and water to, well, moisturise your skin. Oils on the other hand, act as boosters to your moisturiser, drenching the skin with their natural goodness and forming a barrier which seals in moisture and prevents any from escaping or evaporating into the air. Given that most oil blends contain a mix of oils designed to nourish and repair skin, using a face oil at night works brilliantly when your skin has a chance to rest and regenerate itself. To use an oil, apply your skincare routine as normal from cleanser and toner through to serum and moisturiser, then apply your chosen face oil over the top, massaging in a few drops until it’s been absorbed. HERE is a great face massage tip (for a little self care addition to your routine).
