How To Deal With Face Mask Skin

The accessory we never imagined we’d need is essential for protecting us all, but it can play havoc with sensitive skin. Here’s how to stay clear and calm, naturally, while wearing your mask.

Are you a floral print or a stylish block colour? Whichever your fabric, protection and safety looks good on everyone wearing a mask. However, now we’re wearing them all the time, they can play havoc with sensitive skin. Here are some tips and tricks to combatting potential breakouts and inflammation, without compromising on your natural skincare routine, so you can stay skin confident while wearing this year’s MOST essential item!

Potential Problems

Wearing a mask can cause trapped humidity leading to irritation and even rashes, so making sure you switch to a breathable fabric and washing masks regularly at 60° are some immediate steps to take. If you wear a mask all day though or have particularly breakout-prone skin, this may not be enough, because changing levels in humidity and exposure to bacteria can change your skin’s PH level, leading to breakouts, inflammation and rosacea in some cases. A similar effect to wearing lots of heavy makeup every day. And a humid, bacteria-laden environment where skin cells cannot shed as normal is the perfect place for a breakout. But DON’T WORRY! It’s not all grim, as long as you give your skin a bit more attention you can keep on top of these potential issues.

Clean, Super Clean

Cleansing skin in the morning to kick start your day right before using your mask. Our Great Day Face Wash is the perfect starter. With oils of lemon, mandarin and geranium - which are all know to be antibacterial and a natural antiseptic. Spearmint which is anti-inflammatory and known to soothe inflamed skin, peppermint which reduces redness, cools, soothes and calms (and contains high levels of Salicylic Acid which is a natural astringent beneficial for treating blemishes and acne). PLUS may chang oil which also helps invigorate circulation - you’re already onto a winner.

Ideally you’ll cleanse as soon as you remove your mask, and at night we recommend paying special attention to this step in your routine to make sure all makeup and bacteria from the day are washed away. Our Perfect Night’s Sleep Cleansing Balm is great for this, as it’s super gentle and natural, so it nourishes with ingredients like shea butter and rosehip oil (more on that later).

Nourish

Breakouts and irritation are caused by imbalances, so when you’ve been exposed to higher than usual humidity and bacteria it’s all about bringing the balance back. DON’T SKIP THE OIL just because you’ve broken out – it’s essential that skin has this balance in check so it doesn’t over-produce and cause more acne. Look for products with natural oils like peppermint and lavender which are great for clearing up and preventing breakouts. Try our Great Day Glow Face Oil.

And don’t forget your lips, they are front and centre when wearing a mask, after all! Whether you need soothing during the day or last thing at night, keep a pot of Wonder Balm to hand at all times for natural TLC.
